Medieval Life Spotlight: Cooking | Digital Demonstration
Virtual
What can make certain ingredients familiar across the globe and across time? This interactive program includes recipes to prepare together!
The history of spices such as cloves begins in Malaysia, where colonization and trade brought this ingredient to medieval England. We will examine how the global economy of the Middle Ages included European colonial and imperial expansion that transformed cloves from a local ingredient used to support health to a spice used sparingly in sweet treats made thousands of miles away from the source. This interactive program will include opportunities to follow along and prepare recipes with our presenters, chef Ange Branca and Professor Marissa Nicosia of Penn State Abington. Curator Dot Porter will finish the program with a show and tell of relevant manuscripts from Philadelphia collections. Pre-register for this free online program via Eventbrite; you will receive a link to the Zoom session before it begins via email. This program is inspired by the Free Library of Philadelphia's Medieval Life exhibit, now on view online at freelibrary.org/medievallife
